Sayings are not meant to be followed forever sincerely, change for the good.
Once during a conversation with my friend I analyzed the meaning of critical sociology(study of society that focuses on the need of social change). We were discussing about relationships and she stated that according to one of the sayings of Lord Krishna mentioned in the holy book of Bhagwat Gita "A person should give 100% for whatever he/she does in their lives" which is ABSOLUTELY TRUE, but the example she mentioned was that; suppose you love a person and are ready to do everything for him/her, on this my thought was: but one must also see that the efforts don't go vain. Giving your 100% is good, but in today's world blindly doing something for others and not expecting anything is also not done.
Suppose you are giving everything your trust, loyalty, affection, care to a person who doesn't deserve any of them and despite your all efforts he/she is cheating on you then one should be mature enough to understand that now it's done for good and move on in life. Despite giving our best we sometimes fail when it comes to human emotions.
Sayings are said for the betterment of people so that they can walk on the right path but also there's need for modifications. That saying was said in Dwapar Yuga when folklore was different. Today we are living in Kal Yuga (acc to Hindu mythology) and people of todays modern world are more sly, smart and manipulative. They can easily hurt others feelings to accomplish their needs.
So yes we should give our best while doing everything in life but expecting nothing will curb our curiosity and satisfaction. We won't expect anything which is was a kind person does but we can't let people to go far off with the goodness. This nature of ours can lead to massive downfall.
"Sayings are meant to be followed but change for the good as well"
